HRA is a diagnostic procedure using a high-powered microscope to detect anal pre-cancerous cells caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). This is an intervention recommended for EARLY detection of anal cancer. Anal dysplasia is a term used to describe changes at the cell level on the anal lining that can progress into anal cancer.

Anal cancer is relatively uncommon compared to other cancers and therefore less talked about. In the general population only 1.5 men per 100000 and 1.9 women per 100000 will develop anal cancer. This is much higher in people living with HIV (PHV). In this group, the estimated rates are between 46-131 men per 100000 people, and 30 women per 100000. In the recent years research has demonstrated that early screening can prevent development of anal cancer and has saved lives.

High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) is a diagnostic procedure that uses a high-powered microscope to closely examine the anal canal. It helps detect abnormal cells or anal dysplasia that may be caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), allowing early detection and treatment before anal cancer develops.
HRA screening is often recommended for individuals at higher risk for anal dysplasia and anal cancer. This may include people living with HIV, men who have sex with men, transgender women, and individuals with a history of cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer. Your healthcare provider can determine if screening is appropriate for you.
Most patients tolerate HRA well. The procedure may cause mild discomfort, but it is generally quick and performed in a clinical setting. Your provider will guide you through the process to ensure the experience is as comfortable as possible.
